Learning Plan

History

For the first lesson of this unit plan I want to focus on teaching the students about the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. The lesson will start with a KWL chart where as a class we list the things we know and the things we want to know. This teaching is meant to aid in the students understanding of the importance of sustainability and the effects of not understanding or respecting the delicate  balance of the environment around us. This lesson will essentially be a hooking lesson that elicits a concern for our environment and how to preserve it.

What
Recycling
is

During this, the second lesson the students will view the video, Recycling for Kids. From the video and instruction the students will learn  about recycling plastic, glass and paper. During this lesson they will be introduced to the positive impacts sustained recycling can have on the school, community, and the environment. The students will take part in an activity where they are given different items and are instructed to sort them into recyclable and non-recyclable piles.

This will be the third lesson of the unit and is the lesson I have chosen to highlight as my featured lesson.

Recycle
Forever

This will be the fourth and final lesson of this unit. During this lesson the students will continue the creation and distribution of their DIY recycling bins. This will create a network of sustained recycling. Then the students will be given the opportunity to participate in a community clean up where they will be exposed to the littering and negative impact humans are having on our environment. This last lesson is aimed at developing a deep connection to environmental conservation through sustainable practices like community and school clean ups.
